"God made the cat in order that man might have the pleasure of caressing the tiger." - Fernand Mery
Come to think of it, all cats are funny. This page is a tribute to all cats and will remind us, with funny videos and photos, why we love them so much.
Cats are a cosmopolitan species and are found across much of the world.[38] Geneticist Stephen James O'Brien, of the National Cancer Institute in Frederick, Maryland, remarked on how successful cats have been in evolutionary terms: "Cats are one of evolution's most charismatic creatures. They can live on the highest mountains and in the hottest deserts."[167] They are extremely adaptable and are now present on all continents except Antarctica, and on 118 of the 131 main groups of islands—even on sub-Antarctic islands such as the Kerguelen Islands.[168][169] Feral cats can live in forests, grasslands, tundra, coastal areas, agricultural land, scrublands, urban areas and wetlands.[170] Their habitats even include small oceanic islands with no human inhabitants.[171] This ability to thrive in almost any terrestrial habitat has led to the cat's designation as one of the world's worst invasive species.[172] Despite this general adaptability, the close relatives of domestic cats, the African wildcat (Felis silvestris lybica) and the Arabian sand cat (Felis margarita) both inhabit desert environments,[4] and domestic cats still show similar adaptations and behaviors.

This went on for a while before I finally resigned to the fact that I would have to carry him around if I was going to look at any of the other kittens. The kitten was completely content in my arms. He even let me cradle him like a baby. He just wanted me to carry him. And his purr is loud! So I knew he was content.

I tried a few more times to sit with the other kittens and cats while holding him. Everytime I gave another cat attention this little gray kitten would turn into a ninja attack kitty fighting off any kitten or cat that would even dare to come over for attention or sit in my lap. He didn't care how big they were either. A cat that must have weighed around 20 lbs came over for affection and Meesha bit him on the back!

The lady asked me what kind of cat I was looking for. I said "A black fluffy one. But I think this one just adopted me." That's how I  became Meesha's pet.

The lady at the kitty shelter also told me the story of my new kitten. Meesha was found swimming in a local lake where someone had abandoned a litter of kittens. His siblings did not survive. A woman rescued him and brought him to this shelter where they took care of him until he could find a new home.

So, that's the story of how Meesha chose me one day at a kitty shelter.. And he is the sweetest most gentle cat ever! He loves to cuddle and be held. But he's also extremely intelligent and active. And this kitty never ever goes outside unless he's in his carrier or in my arms and on his kitty leash.
Tuesday evening's visit, soon after arriving at my traditional bivouac therefor in form of the Midway Motel on Snelling Avenue in St. Paul, saw me taking supper at a fish-and-chips shop in the Food Building in form and fashion of crab cakes, chips--and a large Diet Coke (pre-diabeetus, you know). And given the diminished crowds from the heat, the atmospherics across the State Fairgrounds, while not eerie, proved rather enchanting when viewed from the SkyGlider's perspective (by way of the 4-H Building and the Arts Centre, two favourites of the fair's gopher mascots, Fairchild and Fairborne; in the former instance, celiac disease seemed to be the hot topic of the moment for 4-H exhibitors, with at least five such thus devoted--including one involving an attempt to make gluten-free English muffins "from scratch."

In July we lost our family cat Salem. Salem was a black long hair fluffy kitty with great big green eyes. He was named after the cat on the tv show "Sabrina the Teenage Witch." He was our world. He hated to be alone and followed us everywhere around the house. He always wanted to be in the middle of everything we did and we loved it. Salem was mostly an indoor cat but liked to go to the bathroom outside. So we would let him out to potty and then he would come right back in. He didn't like to be away from us for very long and he hated to be alone. He was extremely loving and gentle. We thought he would be with us forever.

One day when we let him out he didn't come back in. He just completely disappeared. There were reports of a coyote in the neighborhood and a neighbors cat also went missing about the same time. We were heart broken and devasted. The loss we felt was so great I can't put it into words. The house felt empty and we just couldn't believe that our sweet cat could be gone. We had the whole neighborhood looking for our cat and unfortunately,we never found him.

In September we thought we should get another cat. This time we wanted a kitten. We found a place that was adopting out kittens nearby and they had a huge selection to choose from. I decided to go over one day when the kids were in school. I had my heart set on finding a little black long haired kitten that would remind me of Salem.

The place had maybe 30-40 cats and most of them kittens that had been abandoned or dropped off by previous owners. There was even a litter of long haired black kittens. The lady who ran the place told me I could make myself at home and take my time picking out my pet.  I sat down in the middle of the floor and started playing with them. Talk about cuteness overload!

Out of nowhere this little gray kitten jumped up on my lap and curled into a ball. I thought he was sweet and started petting him while reaching to pick up a black kitty. Another fluffy white and beige kitten came over to sit on my lap too. The gray kitten clawed at her and tried to bite her. She fell off my lap and sat next to me looking up at me with big blue eyes. I picked the gray kitty up off of my lap to let him know that wasn't nice and picked up the little fluffy.

Meesha just after I brought him home.

But the kitten climbed right back up. I smiled and told him he was a cute kitty, put him down again and stood up. I walked over to a group of sleeping kittens. But the little gray kitten persisted. He jumped onto my leg and started climbing up my pants. I picked him up and sat him on a bench. He jumped from the bench as I was walking away and started climbing up my shirt.

And this kitty never ever goes outside unless he's in his carrier or in my arms and on his kitty leash.

And some poutine from Duke's, a little later on in the morning.

Even if most of the exhibit buildings don't open till 9 in the morning, at least you manage to get an opportunity for some serious walking around ... which continued when the commercial exhibits "under the Grandstand" (known colloquially as Varied Industries) opened at 9, eventually allowing moi to pick up my annual Televac Personality Analysis, a maple meat snack stick and a 2014 calendar (which, after some debate to myself, led to one of those featuring Gary Patterson's feline whimsicalia).

Meanwhile, making my traditional patronage of the mascots during their "meet-and-greet" sessions, I couldn't help but notice where Fairborne (who turns 30 this year) now has blue stripes on his showman's jacket and a blue band on the straw hat; the better to avoid long-standing confusion with his uncle Fairchild (as still wears green stripes). And they can get incredibly silly welcoming visitors old and new, and posing for photos (not to mention be rather impressed at some of the discoveries made by yours truly, particularly so at the 4-H exhibits they just love). Lunchtime followed: a wild-rice cheeseburger and waffle fries, with a large birch beer on the side ... followed not long afterward by a Farmers' Union Frappe from their ur-coffee house in the Minnesota Farmers' Union building. Not even your ice-cream headaches can rival those from a frappe.

(Did I mention also buying some Sham-Wow towelling on a "twofer" offer, one set of which was gifted to the motel I do for?)

Following supper at the Hamline Church's dining hall on their storied ham loaf (with bread pudding for dessert), Your Correspondent set out for this year's raison d'etre of his visit: None other than the Internet Cat Video Festival, my first Grandstand experience there. Even with inspection of my shopping bags by security before coming in, I managed to find my seat--front-and-center, first row on the main plaza; credit that to my buying one of the first tickets therefor when they went on sale online. And there was no doubt hilarity ensuing galore throughout--except, however, when two of the biggest stars of the online cat-video genre, Li'l Bub and Grumpy Cat (and their handlers), showed up on stage concurrently. Luckily, no catfights or Katzenjammer between the two ensued (even when Grumpy Cat's original video took home the festival's highest honour, the Golden Cat; five others, including such classics as Nyan Cat, the Japanese sensation Maru, and Keyboard Cat, took home Hall of Fame awards).

(To explain Grumpy Cat's perennial scowl, it's because Tardare Sauce--to use her real name--has a cleft lip.)

And in line with the Minnesota State Fair's long-established tradition of butter sculpture (which actually predates the facial likenesses of Princess Kay of the Milky Way and her court making such an institution rivalled only by the Iowa State Fair's own Butter Cow), the same sculptress who's responsible for the Princess Kay likenesses also contributed a cat sculpted out of a block of butter. (Which, incidentally, was a composite of several cats she was acquainted with. And a male, may I add.)

In case you were wondering about some of the funnier specimens of online feline video among the audience during the actual screening, they included:

A trio of Egyptian sphinx cats swaying their heads to the beat of Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmuzik."
A cat perched atop a closet storage box poking away at an outside window for awhile, eventually crashing through same to the outside, and tapping away therefrom.
Stop-motion animation showing a rather furry cat riding on a briefcase across the floor and the dining-room table.
A cat dolled up in a shark costume, riding atop a Roomba vacuum all the while, trying to chase a duckling across the floor--until a dog in like costume joins in the hijinks.
The aforementioned Maru's hijinks, wiggling his way through an empty box to the point of stuffing himself therein, a la Schrodinger's Cat ... until the box broke up on him. (A Hall of Fame winner, know.)
An ur-Saturday Night Live sketch about a young couple unintentionally getting cats with the bedding and appliances they ordered through the IKEA catalogue, and the store explaining that such were clearance items. (Itself calling to mind a Monty Python sketch about unintentional bonus gifts being added to such purchases as dung with three Book-of-the-Month Club selections, a dead Indian with a new gas oven and the M4 motorway with two cartons of coffee cream.)

(Incidentally, Animal Planet streamed the proceedings live across Teh Innerwebz.)

The traditional end-of-Grandstand-performance fireworks display essentially made it a night--along with two bottles of Dasani water through the evening's course.

Luckily, though, this closing weekend of TGMnGT 2013 (it closes on Labour Day, know) should turn out being rather pleasant and not as humid as earlier on, which saw the misting stations rather popular and going overtime with hot and weary visitors. But it wouldn't hurt to leave early in the morning if you want to beat the expected crowds on the last two days, with Labour Day proper, the Fair's closing day, also seeing some "last chance" value-for-money offers from some of the retailers there.

As in back from his annual (shall we say) pilgrimage to The Great Minnesota Get-Together, otherwise known as the 2013 Minnesota State Fair. Which itself wilted, in some measure, from record-breaking heat as cut into the attendance numbers (and sent nearly 100 fairgoers in toto to hospital for heat-related illnesses), saw misting stations opened at strategic locations on the State Fairgrounds--and bottled water (Dasani in particular) being the beverage of choice at concessionaire stands (even for Your Correspondent, who was recommended it as his "one for the road" on both Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, in the former instance by one of the staff at the Tom Thumb Donuts stand over by Ag-Hort and the Foods Building considering the heat).

Still, though, Your Correspondent did manage to get some water intake in him to get through the heat.

And given the diminished crowds from the heat, the atmospherics across the State Fairgrounds, while not eerie, proved rather enchanting when viewed from the SkyGlider's perspective (by way of the 4-H Building and the Arts Centre, two favourites of the fair's gopher mascots, Fairchild and Fairborne; in the former instance, celiac disease seemed to be the hot topic of the moment for 4-H exhibitors, with at least five such thus devoted--including one involving an attempt to make gluten-free English muffins "from scratch.")

Equally enchanting, in its own way, is the smoke coming off the grill from the Butcher Boys stand, as serves up London broil sandwiches that turn out being rather moist, tasty and even running rings around more conventional shaved roast beef such. Even with grilled onions and peppers as a topper. (Said smoke drifting in its own way over the State Fairgrounds around the Grandstand area.)

Too, there was some shopping as got completed: A souvenir T-shirt, a couple packets of Cream of Wild Rice soup mix (which I hope to fix in my slow cooker), a Pearson's Nut Goodie--not much else.

Coming in early on Wednesday morning, custom (and those gopher mascots' tastes) directed me to breakfast at The Peg, "the only full-service eatery on the State Fairgrounds" on the outside of Ag-Hort ... and The Peg Muffin, a somewhat legendary (if messy) breakfast sandwich of sausage, egg, tomato and cheese on a toasted English muffin. Washed down with a large iced tea. Followed by another mascot favourite, those fruit-filled scones from French Meadow Bakery (I took the peach such, which happens to be flash-frozen to maintain freshness at its utmost).

Grumpy Cat became an internet sensation after her photo was posted on Reddit on September 22, 2012. It was suggested that the original photo was photoshopped, so we posted a few videos on YouTube. The videos went viral and her popularity has continued to increase!

We aren’t exactly sure about Grumpy Cats breed; but she looks nothing like her mother or father. She looks similar to a Ragdoll or Showshoe; but there have never been any of that breed around the house. Her mom is a calico domestic short hair cat and her father has grey and white stripes. (Though I suppose there could be a different father, promiscuous cats you know…)

Tardar Sauce visites the vet regularly and she has a clean bill of health. Her petite size and famous face is likely due to feline dwarfism and her rear end wobbles a bit when she walks due to this; otherwise she is a perfect little kitty! She is not a munchkin cat and was not bred purposefully from other munchkin cats. (We don’t breed kitty’s and her parents are normal sized domestic short hair cats.)

Also, a quick note on Grumpy Cat’s wellbeing. We take great care of Tardar Sauce; 99% of the time she is a normal kitty. She plays, hides, and acts as cats act. (She LOVES to hide behind the curtains!) She isn’t in front of a camera all of the time like many people perceive. We only take photos sets once every week or so and on the few occasions where we have met with the media or licensed partners we ensure the sessions are short and that she isn’t handled by many people. Tardar Sauce is a member of the family before anything else!

Q: How old is Grumpy Cat?
A: She was born on April 4, 2012.

Q: Can I meet Grumpy Cat?
A: For the safety of our family and that of Grumpy Cat we do not do personal meetings. We will be having select public appearances and these will be announce on our website and via social media.

Q: Does Grumpy Cat travel well?
A: Grumpy Cat is the most calm kitty we have ever come across! She travels perfectly fine and is extremely calm when traveling. We have only traveled with her on a few occasions and she usually just sleeps in the soft bed in her pet carrier.

Q: What breed is Grumpy Cat?
A: She is a mixed breed; but looks to have some Persian, Ragdoll, or Snowshoe in her line.

Funny Looking Cat

The character has no name other than "The Cat" or simply "Cat". In the first Red Dwarf novel Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers it is explained that The Cat does have a name but he figures if they don't already know it he's not going to tell them. He is the humanoid descendant of a modern domestic cat called Frankenstein who had been Dave Lister's pregnant pet cat. He may be the last remaining member of his species, Felis sapiens. His species expanded and evolved into a humanoid form over 3,000,000 years while sealed in the cargo hold of Red Dwarf while Dave Lister was in suspended animation. They formed a religion based on the saviour of Frankenstein: "Cloister the Stupid", the father of their race according to their legends (actually Lister), and "Fuchal", their promised land (actually the Fiji islands, a place Lister held in high regard and planned to retire to). The race eventually splits and descends into civil war, over what colour the hats at the hot dog and doughnut stand Lister planned to open on Fiji were going to be (the cause is the name of their god in the original novels). Ironically the two factions claimed they were going to be red or blue, whilst Lister had wanted them to be green. Eventually the two factions formed a truce and build two great space arks to go and search for Lister and the promised land. One of the two arks, following a set of sacred directions (Lister's laundry list, which he lined Frankenstein's basket with), promptly crashed into an asteroid; it is not known what happened to the other. The assorted lame, sick and stupid were left behind; these all eventually died off, but a crippled female and a retarded male (who ate his own feet, which Cat had wondered about) produced The Cat before dying. It appears that The Cat was mainly raised by a blind Cat Priest, though a brief mention is made to The Cat's mother in the original novel.
In early episodes, The Cat exhibits typical feline behaviours such as licking anyone who gives him food, playing with 'shiny things' and marking his territory, for which purpose he carries a small spray-can, of which the contents are unknown (possibly urine, seeing as this is how cats mark their territory), in his pocket. While scent-marking, he repeats, "This is mine, this is mine, and all of this is mine." The Cat also had shown little concern for the welfare of his crewmates. His extreme self-confidence results in him thinking himself to be irresistible to women, without ever having met any. He is originally very self-centered, acting purely without concern when his old mentor the "Cat Priest" dies, giving Kryten an earring which he hates on the day before his automatic self-destruct and choosing to finish his lunch rather than carry Lister to the medical bay when he collapses, he later improves however. In the episode Stasis Leak, the crew discover a portal, referred to as a "Magic door" by Cat, which allows them to go back before the crew are wiped out, he sees actual human females, and remarks "They make me want to do something. I don't know what it is! Whatever it is, I wanna do it a lot of it!" By Series IV, the Cat becomes less obsessed with mating, and begins to develop a friendship with Dave Lister — possibly due to their mutual contempt for Rimmer. The Cat vaguely taught Lister the meaning of the cat word JOZXYQK, which is a sound that is made when one's sexual organs are trapped in something, during a game of "Scrabble"
The Cat has an alternate version of himself in an opposite universe called The Dog. Among his other alter egos is the "Duke of Dork", Duane Dibbley, who represents the 'nerd' stereotype and the Cat's idea of a meaningless existence. In the episode "Demons and Angels", The Cat's good and bad side are seen, his good side being a "Ned Flanders" religious type residing in a hooded robe and sandals, whilst explaining to the normal cat that he is his higher self, his spiritual side, extrapolated from his being the normal cat replies "Extrapa"what"elated, buddy there is no way you are a part of me, no part of me would ever be seen alive in sandals". This version is eventually shot at and blown up with the "divine" Kryten when they believe that a bomb thrown from the "Low" versions of the crew is a greetings gift. The other half is more savage and gangster-like than either of the other cats, notably he has no fashion sense being nearly dressed in nothing but rags, furs and black leather. His teeth have grown way out of proportion, making him more like a "Sabre-toothed cat". This version was destroyed when the two new Red Dwarfs regenerate into the old one. An alternative Cat is briefly encountered when the Dwarfers meet themselves from an alternative timeline and are joined by Kristine Kochanski. This Cat seems far more upper-class and subdued in appearance, in line with Polanski's nature. Cat's mirror opposite is also encountered in the mirror universe (Series VIII episode "Only the Good..."), a wise professor who finds it ridiculously easy to pronounce profoundly long words, e.g., Cesium palaeolithic my xialobidiumrixy Dix oxidizer oxide. This version of The Cat is more intelligent than both the original Cat and Duane Dibbley. In 'Ace' Rimmer's universe (series IV episode "Dimension Jump), the Cat is the base priest. This Cat smokes a pipe and congratulates Ace Rimmer on helping a sick boy recover.

In the Series X episode "Entangled" the Cat is shown to still be afflicted by the primal urge to hunt, running and jumping through the halls of Red Dwarf in pursuit of an illusive Spave Weevil. In the series finale episode "The Beginning" he is also shown to be surprisingly astute and sensitive when it comes to to other peoples problems, despite his often apparent aloofness.
